The Dress You'll Wear to Every Wedding This Season

By October every Nigerian wedding guest has the same problem. Three invitations sitting in your WhatsApp, two of them on the same weekend, and a wardrobe that felt full back in August.

Some of them come with aso ebi, which is a relief. You pay, you collect the fabric, your tailor does the rest, and that's one Saturday sorted. But be honest, when last did you wear an aso ebi outfit twice? It belongs to that wedding. Half the people in the photos are wearing it too.

It's the other invitations that cause the stress. The introduction your cousin mentioned in passing. The court wedding on a Thursday morning. Your friend's reception, where you're not family, so nobody is sending you fabric.

Stop buying a new dress for every wedding

Most of us do it anyway. New invite, new dress. By December the wardrobe is full of things worn once and your account has noticed.

It also makes every decision harder. When a dress has to be perfect for one particular wedding, you'll spend two weekends hunting for it. When it only has to be right for you, you'll know the moment you try it on.

The best dressed women at weddings rarely own the most clothes. They have four or five pieces they trust, and they wear them differently every time.

What to look for

Skip the dress with one big statement detail. People remember those, and once they remember a dress you can't wear it in front of them again. The ones that last are beautiful because of the cut.

Fit matters more than the occasion. A dress that fits you properly will look right in a church, at a registry and at a reception. A dress that only suits the occasion won't.

Think about the photos, because everything ends up on Instagram. It helps if the colour looks as good under reception lights as it does outside at noon.

And make sure the fabric can survive a long, hot day. You want to leave looking the way you arrived.

Where aso ebi fits

This isn't a case against aso ebi. When you're part of the group, wear it and wear it proudly. It just does a different job. Aso ebi is made for one wedding. The dresses we're talking about are made for you.

One dress, four weddings

Take a single dress through a season and see how far it goes.

For an introduction, keep it quiet. Flat sandals, small earrings, neat hair. There will be aunties.

For a court wedding, lift it a little with a heel, a structured bag and something at the ear.

For the white wedding, go elegant. Closed heels, your best jewelry, hair up.

For the reception, have fun. Bold lip, big earrings, whatever the night calls for. Four different outfits, and nobody will clock that it's the same dress.

Where AMARAÉ comes in

We design for exactly this. Most of our customers don't live in neat, separate occasions. They go from one thing straight to the next, often without going home in between.

If you want one piece for wedding season, it's the Willow. The petal-work gives it enough sense of occasion that the rest of the dress can stay simple. It covers properly, so you're comfortable in a church. The back is open but softened with chain detailing, so it never feels like too much.

For the smaller ceremonies, the Iris does the job without making you the most dressed person at the registry.

Shop AMARAÉ for dresses you'll wear more than once. Delivery across Nigeria and worldwide.
