AMARAÉ black dress for a Nigerian wedding guest

Can You Wear Black to a Nigerian Wedding?

Where the fear comes from

Black reads as mourning here, and that association is strong. Funerals, condolence visits, the whole register. So, avoiding it at a celebration feels like the safe instinct.

But the actual rule at a Nigerian wedding is narrower than people think. Don't wear white, ivory or cream, because that belongs to the bride. That's the rule. Everything after that is open.

When to leave it alone

There are a few times to think twice. Introductions and traditional ceremonies run more conservative, and if you're close family with older relatives watching, it's worth a quick ask. Cheaper than the conversation afterwards.

And if the couple sent a colour scheme, wear the colour scheme. That isn't about black. That's about reading the room.

Otherwise, if you're one guest among two hundred at a white wedding or a reception, wear what you want.

Why it's the hardest working dress you own

A black dress goes to a wedding reception, dinner on Friday, a launch, and a work thing, and nobody notices it's the same dress. Print announces itself. Black doesn't. You can wear it three times in a month in front of the same people and get away with it.

It also photographs the same everywhere. Reception lighting, a dim restaurant, outside at noon. Colour shifts in all of those. Black holds.

And nothing takes styling better. Gold against it reads completely differently from silver. A red lip changes the whole dress. A gele changes it again.

The catch

Black shows everything. There's no print and no shade to hide behind, so bad fabric looks bad faster in black than in any other colour, and it shows from across a room.

This is the one colour where the fabric is worth paying for. A well-made black dress looks expensive on anybody. A badly made one looks like you were in a hurry.

And the heat

Nobody warns you about this part. Black absorbs heat, and in Lagos that is not a small thing. If any of your day is outdoors, the fabric has to breathe.

A heavy, fully lined black dress in March is a mistake you make exactly once.

How to keep it from reading like a funeral

Mostly it's what you add. Black dress, black shoes, no jewellery and you've dressed for a wake. Black with gold, a strong lip and good shoes and you look like you know exactly what you're doing.

Texture does a lot of the work too. A black dress with some detail in it, something that catches light when you move, sits completely differently from a flat one. That's usually what separates the black dress people compliment from the one nobody mentions.

Where AMARAÉ stands on it

We design for dresses that get worn again, which is the whole argument for black in the first place. A piece that carries you from a Saturday reception to a Thursday dinner without anybody noticing is worth more than two separate dresses per occasion.

Buy the black dress. Just buy a good one, in a fabric that can handle the weather, and give it something to work with when you put it on.

Shop AMARAÉ for dresses built to be worn more than once. Delivery across Nigeria and worldwide.
